Disc Golf is one of the six game events of Sports Champions for the PlayStation® 3 Move.
About Disc Golf[]
Disc Golf is Sports Champions version of a game not unlike golf whose objective is to traverse a course by throwing a flat aerodynamic flying disc (such as a Frisbee®) into a series of special baskets. The objective is to throw a disc into a basket in the fewest number of throws.
Game Play[]
Disc golf can be played with a single player playing alone on the course, competing against game-provided opponents, or by two to four players either playing as a team against the game or competing against each other. Each player requires a single Move Controller.
The course consists of a series of "holes", each with a "tee", or starting location, and a basket, or objective. Each hole may offer different distances and other unique challenges, including obstacles and hazards. The objective is to throw a disc into a basket in the fewest number of throws, or shots.
Players alternate shots, with "Player 1" starting the game from the designated tee for the first hole. After both players have made their first shot, the player whose disc is furthest from the hole shoots next, until all players have thrown their disc into the basket. For subsequent holes, the player who scored lowest on the previous hole throws first (or, if the previous hole was tied, the same player who began the previous hole has the honors again.)
If a disc is thrown such that it comes to rest out of bounds (off the established course), a one-stroke penalty is added the player's score and the player continues play from the point where the disc was last thrown. If the disc comes to rest in a hazard (an unplayable location, usually water), a one-stroke penalty is added the player's score for the hole and the player continues play from the point where the disc entered the hazard. Please add Giselle's disc golf medal for all cups.
As in traditional golf, each hole is rated according to how many throws it is expected an average proficient player will take. This count is called par, usually three and sometimes four throws. A player who puts the disc in the basket in this number of throws is said to par the hole. If it takes one fewer throws, it is called a birdie; two throws fewer than par is called an eagle. One more throw than par is called a bogey; two more a double-bogey, and so on. The game allows a maximum of ten throws per hole, after which a score of ten is entered for the hole and play moves to the next hole.
In Free Play, the game may be scored by overall strokes (throws), summed over all holes on the course; or, by winning the most individual holes, counting each hole won (completed in the fewest throws) as a single point regardless of the margin of victory. In Champion's Cup, all games are scored by total strokes.
A player has a choice of discs of different weights. The lighter-weight disc, the "driver", is for long distance shots; it has the longest range, but is more difficult to control, especially in wind. The heaviest disc, the "putter", is for short distances; it is more accurate but has less range. A mid-range disc splits the difference in these two weights. Sports Champions will automatically select a disc based on the current distance to the basket, suggesting the putter for shots 100 feet (30 meters) or less, the mid-range for 100'-200' (30m-60m) shots, and the driver for more than 200 feet (60 meters). The player can change this disc selection by pressing the O button on the Move controller before picking up the disc to throw.
A player picks up the disc by pressing the T button on the Move Controller, and then moves the controller in a horizontal arc toward the TV and Playstation Move Eye, releasing the T button at the point in the throw to obtain the desired direction.
A player may hold the Move controller at a slight angle, instead of level to the ground, to cause the disc to curve in flight. If the players arm is moving upward at the time of release, the disc will initially move higher. If the Move controller is moving down at the time of release, the disc will fly downward toward the ground.
If a disc in flight strikes an object, it will react according to the object. A rock or tree trunk will usually cause the disc to bounce, while leaves and bushes will quickly slow the disc's progresses, possibly causing it to fall. A disc that touches the ground may either skip, slide, bounce, or roll, according to the texture of the ground.
The objective is to throw the disc into the hole's basket in as few throws as possible. The basket has chains hanging above it that make a target that can help catch and drop the disc into the basket below by draining the disc's momentum.
The number of holes in a game or match is set in advance. In Champions Cup play, most Bronze Cup matches are three holes, Silver Sup matches are four holes each, Gold Cup matches are five holes each, and the bonus Champion's Cup tournament is six holes each. Free Play mode matches are either six or 18 holes each. If the score is tied after the scheduled number of holes are played, a sudden-death play-off continues (from the original starting hole of the match) until one player has won.
Disc Golf retains much terminology from its traditional golf ancestor: Individual segments are called holes, even though the target is not a hole in the ground but a basket. The starting point for each hole is still called the tee, even though nothing is placed on a tee. The area around the basket is called the green, and short throws to the basket are called putts.
Controls[]
The player presses and holds the T button to hold the disc. The disc is thrown by moving the Playstation Move controller in a way to simulate the throw, releasing the T button at the desired point in in the swing to release the disc. Moving upward during the throw causes the disc to rise and travel further.
The angle of the Move controller will determine the curve of the disc's flight path. Tilting the Move controller slightly causes the disc to curve in flight. Elevating the controller during the swing causes the disc to rise (higher elevation can even cause the disc to fly up and then arc back toward the thrower.)
Aim. The player may aim the avatar by pressing and holding the Move button on the Move controller and aiming the Move controller to the left or right to turn the avatar.
Activate the Free-Cam. The player can adjust the view and look around by pressing and holding the triangle Δ button on the Move controller and aiming the Move controller left or right to change the view. While using the Free-can, the player can zoom the current view with the T button on the Move controller.
Select disc. The player can change the disc by pressing the circle button. A driver, mid-range, and putter disc are selectable depending on distance to the basket. The driver disc is lightest and has the greatest range, the putter disc is heavier, for shorter range but easier control. (Sports Champions initially selects a disc for each shot based on distance to the hole.)
Show scorecard. View the scorecard for past holes and totals; see who's winning, and by how many strokes or holes. Press T button to return to play.
The Course[]
Disc Golf offers eighteen unique holes for play with a wide variety of simulated environments. These include the traditional grass and trees surroundings, with shrubs, rocks, hills, ponds, and streams. There are some scenic rock formations, including natural bridges and tunnels. Finally, there is a snow and ice-covered landscape. Different holes offer different kinds of obstacles and ground surfaces that provide different bounces and landings for discs (e.g. a disc landing on grass will only slide a short distance, while a disc landing on ice will slide a long way.)
Each hole also offers three tees: one for Bronze (easiest), one for Silver, and one for Gold (most difficult). The more challenging tees are further from the basket and often add additional obstacles and hazards, requiring longer and more accurate throws. (More difficult levels also add blowing wind.) The location of all three tees are marked on the maps below (in Red for Bronze, blue for Silver, and yellow for Gold.) Click a map thumbnail to view the map.
In Free Play, there is a choice of four "courses," each of which may be played in daytime or nighttime lighting conditions. Play may use the entire eighteen holes, or three courses of six holes each (one third of the full 18-hole course): "The Park" (holes 1-6), "The Mountains" (holes 7-12), and "Snows" (holes 13-18). Any of these four courses may be played in daylight or at night (other than faded colors and reduced contrast, plus lamp lights and cricket sounds, daytime and nighttime play is identical.)
In Champions Cup, the starting hole and number of holes played are determined by the match; whichever hole starts play, the subsequent holes of the game are played in this same order. (The bonus Champions play, unlocked after winning the Gold Cup, uses the gold tees.) All Cup matches are played in daylight, except the final round of each cup and the bonus matches, which are played at night.

There are four more locations for Free Play Mode in the Reverse Course Add-on content package available for purchase and download from the PlayStation Store. These additional play locations use the same terrain, fairways and hazards shown above, but swaps the tee and basket on each hole to give a different view and set of challenges.
View[]
The player views the golf course from the perspective of the disc's location. The player may look around before the shot by using the triangle button on the Move controller (see above.)
Because players alternate shots, there is a single view on the TV screen, rather than the split-screen view of sports that are played concurrently. Sports Champions sets the view for the player whose turn it is to shoot.
There is a small map of the current hole in the lower left corner of the screen, called the mini-map,which shows the current course from the tee to the basket. It shows the location of the basket, the current location of the player's disc, and major obstacles and hazards. A reddish triangle, expanding from the players position, tints the area the player is facing, and rotates as the player uses the Move button and Motion Controller to aim.
A vertical power meter next to the mini-map shows the percent of a full throw in the player's stroke. It fills from the bottom as the player swings the Move controller. This is useful for checking during practice swings before actually releasing the disc, to estimate distance.
A light-blue arrow appears at the top of the screen as a wind direction and speed indicator. This is used to help the player judge what effect wind might have on the disc in flight.
Wind becomes a greater factor as play advances from bronze to silver to gold to champions skill level.
Champions Cup[]
The Champions Cup is a series of Disc Golf matches for a single player against each of the ten playable characters, in turn, each of increasing difficulty. There are four such Cup tournaments: Bronze Cup, Silver Cup, Gold Cup, and finally Champions Cup. (The latter is only visible after winning the Gold Cup.) Each cup must be won in order by winning the ten matches (and completing the challenge round.) Each of the ten matches in the Cup must be won at least once to unlock the next match. A player can play a re-match against the current unbeaten Cup opponent until the player wins the match at least once. (It is not necessary to repeat earlier victories in a Cup tournament to earn a re-match for a loss. Still, a player may return to any previously-won match, at any Cup skill level, for a re-match at any time by selecting that character as an opponent. Losing a re-match does not affect the player's tournament advancement or high-score for that round.)
Challenge Cup Disc Golf matches consist of a single round, Bronze Cup matches are 3 holes each (except for final, 10th round vs. Gisselle, which is 6 holes), Silver Cup rounds are four holes (except for final, 10th round vs. Gisselle, which is 8 holes), Gold Cup games are five holes, and Champions Cup games are nine holes. If the score is tied after the standard number of holes, play continues in sudden death until a competitor wins. In the Bronze Cup matches, the game provide tutorials between matches to teach the basics of playing Disc Golf. Bronze cup matches also provide some assistance to correct throwing errors, allowing novices a more forgiving experience. Silver and Gold Cup matches begin each hole from a more distant tee, making the course longer and more challenging at the higher levels.
The sixth round of the tournament is a special challenge round; it is a shortened version of the Challenge mode, with the player trying to throw as many discs as possible through floating hoops to score points in a limited time. It cannot be lost, but it must be completed at least once to unlock the next round.
Match Scoring[]
The character with the lowest stroke total for the match (summed over all holes played) wins the match. Each player victory in a Disc Golf Champions Cup match is given a score, depending on a number of statistics for the player's victory:
Under Par | Per hole: 200 per birdie hole, 1000 per eagle hole.
Long Shot | Putts which land in the basket from a distance (must be done with putter disc) x 50 (20'-30' / 6m-9m)
Bank Shot | x 50 | Shot which strikes and bounces off an object (tree, cliff face, post) and lands in basket. Rarely practical. |
Salvage Par | x 100 | Recover from a terrible first shot (e.g. into a water hazard) to still score par on the hole. (Not worth doing intentionally.) |
Hang Time | seconds x 10 | Total time your disc travels in the air before coming to the ground. |
Fore! shots | x 50 | A shot requiring the opponent to move to avoid your disc. |
Skippers | x 50 | A shot "skipping" off the ground or water and landing in the basket. |
Stroke Spread | x 150 | Total margin of victory for match. |
Difficulty level bonus multiplier |
x 1.00 bronze x 1.25 silver |
A multiplier applied to the total point score based on difficulty level of match. |
One to three Stars are awarded for each Disc Golf player victory in champions cup, according to the number of points scored in the Champions Cup victory. Most Bronze matches require 750 points for two stars, and 1250 points for three stars; most Silver matches require 1000 points for two stars and 1500 for three stars; most Gold matches require 1200 for two stars and 1500 for three stars; most bonus Champions cup rounds require 1750 points for two stars and 2250 for three stars. (See Disc Golf Cup Matches below for details on individual match scoring.) Three stars is required to unlock a character's cup outfit. Sports Champions also awards Sports Champions Trophies for several milestones of total Points and Stars earned across all sports.
A player may play a re-match of any Champions Cup match; the game only records the player's highest score and stars awarded in each match.
Disc Golf Cup Matches[]
The Disc Golf Champions Cup tournaments matches are played in order over different sub-sets of the course. Each round is played against a different opponent (with different levels of skill), the order of opponent being the same for all four Champions Cup Tournaments (Bronze, Silver, Gold, and Champions (Platinum)). Each round is also played on a different course, a consecutive set of holes on the larger 18-hole course described above. The number of holes in each tournament match varies by the difficulty level of the current cup.

Victory Pose[]
After winning all ten matches of any Disc Golf Cup, the Playstation will use the Playstation Move "Eye" camera to take a "victory pose" picture, electronically editing in a disc where the Move controller is held. This victory pose photo may be ignored, saved on the Playstation, or uploaded to Facebook. A photo saved on the Playstation can be viewed by going to the Disc Golf Champions Cup screen for that Cup level (where the player selects the character and opponent) and pressing the square [] button. The photo may not be deleted, but it can be replaced by playing a re-match of the final round and winning it again, then taking a new victory pose photo and saving it, which replaces the previous one.
Unlockables[]
There are four Cups of increasing skill level: Bronze Cup, Silver Cup, Gold Cup, and finally Champions Cup. Each Cup must be won to unlock the next higher tournament. Each Cup may be won by defeating all ten opponents (and completing the challenge round.) The Champions Cup round does not appear until the Gold Cup is won.
Bonus Round Character[]
Winning the tenth match in the Gold Cup unlocks the Champions Cup tournament for play. It also unlocks a bonus match in the Gold Cup against a new bonus character, Umrog (a caveman!?) The bonus match does not need to be played or won in order to continue to the Champions Cup play. Winning the bonus round in the Gold Cup makes the bonus character avatar, Umrog, available for play in this and other sports.
Character Outfits[]
Defeating a character with a three stars victory in any Cup round unlocks an additional Disc Golf outfit for that defeated character, according to the Cup level. Unlocked outfits are available for that character in all modes of Disc Golf play: Champions Cup, Free Play, and Challenge mode. Each character begins with two golf outfits, called "uniform" and "casual". A 3-star Bronze victory unlocks a brown "bronze" outfit, a 3-star Silver victory unlocks a blue "silver" outfit, a 3-star Gold victory unlocks a yellow "gold" outfit, and a 3-star Champions level victory unlocks a black "champions" outfit. Note: the outfit is won for the defeated character avatar; so, to earn an outfit for your own avatar, you must defeat yourself with a 3-star win. The player can cycle through available character outfits on the character-selection screen by pressing the circle O button on the Move controller at the character selection screen before play begins.
Bonus Disc Sets[]
Certain achievements in Disc Golf's Champions Cup play unlock bonus custom discs. In addition to the standard red, blue, violet set of driver, mid-range and putter discs, other disc sets can be unlocked for use: defeating Connor in round 5 of the Bronze Cup (by any margin) unlocks "Stone Discs Set"; defeating Connor in round 5 of the Silver Cup unlocks "Groovey Discs Set" (a tie-dyed psychedelic style that escaped from the 60's); defeating Connor in round 5 of the Gold Cup unlocks "Vinyl Records Set" discs (an audio technology from the 60's, sound reproduction by scratching plastic.) Defeating the hidden Disc Golf master Umrog in the final (11th) bonus round of the final (4th) Champions Cup tournament unlocks his custom disc set (not pictured). The "China Plates" set is awarded as a "booby prize" for losing the same match three consecutive times.
Stone Discs Set | Groovy Discs Set | Vinyl Records Disc Set | China Plate Set | Umrog Disc Set |
5th round Bronze | 5th round Silver | 5th round Gold | 3 straight losses | Champions Cup |
A player can cycle through the choice of available discs for the match by pressing the X button on the Move controller at the character selection screen before play begins of any match. Each bonus disc set contains a driver, mid-range, and putter disc. Disc sets are cosmetic only, and do not affect play.
Bonus Courses[]
Disc Golf Free Play mode begins with four "disc golf courses" holes available for play: three "short course" of 6 holes each, and a full 18 holes, all played in daylight. Victories in Champions Cup play, winning the Bronze Cup or Silver Cup, unlocks playing on those courses at nighttime. The change to night play is largely cosmetic and affects only lighting, while the subset of holes in the short courses affects play by demanding different throwing skills to meet each hole's challenge.
There are four more locations for Free Play Mode in the Reverse Course Add-on content package available for purchase and download from the PlayStation Store. These additional play locations use the same terrain, fairways and hazards, but swaps the tee and basket on each hole to give a different view and set of challenges.
Free Play[]
Free Play mode allows casual Disc Golf play for one to four players. Since Disc Golf shots are sequential, alternating players, rather than concurrent, a "split screen" view isn't needed; Disc Golf provides a view for the player whose turn it is to shoot. If there are more players than move controllers, the players may share a Move Controller (be sure to pay attention to which avatar is currently on screen, and pass the Move Controller to that avatar's player.)
Each of the players may select either Bronze, Silver, or Gold level of difficulty. Bronze and Silver levels provide some game assistance to make play easier for novices, while Gold level provides no assistance. The choice of difficulty also changes which tee is used for each hole, with Bronze play using a tee closer to the basket with fewer obstacles, while Silver play moves the tees slightly further away, and Gold provide the longest distances and most difficult obstacles. (When two players compete, each may choose a different difficulty level. This makes it possible for a more experienced player to provide a handicap to a less experienced player, by, e.g., having the better player use Gold and the novice player use Bronze.) More difficult levels also introduce higher winds as a factor in play. In play against game-operated opponents, Bronze and Silver levels also provides easier opponents.
Free Play matches differ from Champions Cup matches in that Free Play always involves either 6 or 18 holes of play.
The player chooses specific golf courses for Free Play. Not all courses are available initially; some need to be unlocked by winning Cups in the Champions Cup. Three 6-hole sub-courses are always available: The Park, The Mountains, and Snows, plus the complete 18-hole course, all in daylight. The Bronze Cup unlocks The Park and The Mountains "alternate", which means at night. The Silver Cup unlocks Snows and the full 18-hole course at night.
Disc golf can be played in either of two scoring styles:
Match Play[]
One or two players may compete in Match Play to win the most holes. A player wins a hole by getting the lowest score on that hole, regardless of the margin of victory (a tie doesn't score to either player.) The players' overall stroke total for the course isn't significant. If only one player plays, the game provides a CPU-run avatar opponent.
Stroke Play[]
One to four players compete in Stroke Play for the lowest overall stroke total for the course. If there are fewer than four players, additional game-run opponents can be added. A single player may play the course alone, without any opponent (Disc Golf is the only Sports Champions event that allows solo Free Play without an opponent.)
Challenge Mode[]
Disc Golf Challenge Mode allows a single player to test throwing accuracy and speed. The player is presented with a number of floating, rotating rings of different diameters.
The player throws a disc at any one of the rings, using the usual Move controller motion. If the disc goes through the ring, it scores the indicated number of points (20, 60, 100), and the ring disappears. When all three scoring rings are gone, a new set appears. Throwing the disc through the ring containing a stop-watch adds additional time to the challenge. The objective is to score as many points as possible in the time limit (initially 60 seconds, may be expanded by scoring time extension rings.) Sports Champions keeps track of the player's highest score.
Challenge Mode is not available in Disc Golf until the player has completed the first, Bronze special challenge round in Disc Golf's Champions Cup play (which requires winning the first five matches of the Bronze tournament.)
A time limit is not part of normal Disc Golf play.
